Bare Canvas

About Bare Canvas

Bare Canvas is a single, finished publication: a five-step course for readers in Australia who are new to online PC games. It is not a magazine, a news outlet or a blog, and it is not going to grow into one.

Who publishes it

Bare Canvas is published by:

Writing is credited to the Mimo-mind s.r.o. editorial team. There are no individual bylines on this site, and there is no staff page, because the useful question about a page like this is how it was made and who pays for it, not whose photograph appears beside it.

Editorial method

How the course was structured

We started from the order in which a question actually arrives for someone who has never installed a game. What is this thing and how does it make money. Will it run on my computer. What am I agreeing to. How do I get it on here safely. How do I keep it from costing more than I meant. That became the five steps, in that order, and each step assumes the one before it and nothing else.

Every step ends in a checklist because reading something and being able to act on it are different states, and the checklist is the bridge. The checklists are static printed lists: nothing on this site records what you have done.

What each step relies on

  • Step 1 describes a business model and defines vocabulary. Its one legal point — that advertising a product as free is subject to the Australian Consumer Law — is sourced to the ACCC, the body that administers it.
  • Step 2 is about hardware and is written from the general behaviour of desktop operating systems rather than from any publisher's documentation. Its safety point links to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
  • Step 3 concerns accounts and contracts. It points at the ACCC for consumer guarantees, the OAIC for privacy, Scamwatch for reported scam patterns and the eSafety Commissioner for families.
  • Step 4 describes installation generically, so that it applies to whichever title you choose rather than documenting one publisher's buttons, which would be out of date within months.
  • Step 5 covers spending and classification, and sends you to the Australian Classification Board for ratings and consumer advice rather than stating any rating or threshold ourselves.

Where we could not source a statement to a body that publishes it, we either phrased it as general guidance or left it out. You will notice several places where the course says plainly that the vendor has not stated something. That is deliberate: a gap named is more useful to you than a gap filled with our guesswork.

What you will not find here

No testimonials or learner quotes. No invented authors. No statistics, benchmarks, test results or awards — if we have not measured something, we do not report a number for it. No enrolment, no certificate, no account. No claim that this course is official, authorised or endorsed by any brand it mentions. The household that appears in the worked examples is explicitly hypothetical, has no name, and reports no product results.

How often it is reviewed

The course is reviewed when something it depends on changes — an Australian body reorganising its guidance, a platform limitation shifting, or a reader writing in to tell us something is wrong. The review date appears in the footer of every page and is updated when a review happens. At the time of writing, the course was last reviewed on 9 October 2026.

The commercial relationship, stated plainly

Mimo-mind s.r.o. has a commercial relationship with the affiliate programme behind World of Warships, which is mentioned in the course and linked from several of the steps. Those links are paid: if you follow one and create and activate an account, we are paid a commission by the affiliate network that operates the link.

So the product mentioned by name in this course is one we are paid to link to. We would rather write that sentence than let you work it out. What the arrangement does not do is decide what the steps say. The structure above was fixed before any link was placed, the general guidance does not change according to whether a link sits near it, and every checklist can be completed without following a single paid link. The funding page sets this out in full.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, write to info@barecanvas.online and say which page and which sentence. We will either fix it or explain why we think it is right. Corrections are made to the page itself and the review date updated.
